VED's and "Pumping"

Categories: Prostate Cancer

Question:

I am post RP with one nerve spared. Viagra does not work for me. I have recently obtained a medically approve VED (Timm) and am pleased to report that it does produce a functional erection for me. I would appreciate from anyone who has some longer term experience with the use of VED"s any information on the following: (1) Does regular use produce any benefit with respect to improved natural bloodflow to the penis, ie, to improving the ability to achieve a natural erection? (2) Does regular use produce any benefit in terms of permanent increase in penis size as many manufacturers claim? Like many RP patients I feel that I lost some length as a result of the surgery. (3) What would be a recommended "exercise" program in terms of tomes per week or per day, length of session, cycles of pump and release or pump and hold, etc. Any serious input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I feel it does and I had one nerve spared, and after 2 years of various sorts of injection, pump, and viagra….I finally have some results. I feel it was a good stepping stone so to speak in improving sexual response in a nerve damage. I don’t think things are getting any large.  Just getting engorged. (3) What would be a recommended "exercise" program in terms of tomes per week or per day, length of session, cycles of pump and release or pump and hold, etc.

What makes you feel good……anytime……You have to decide, and let your mind help.  Try it alone.  with your partner, experiment.  What you are doing is exersizing a damaged area and helping blood flow, and encouraging nerve healimg. I did improve over the period of time I used the pump, but of course there is no way to tell if the pump had anything to do with it. (2) Does regular use produce any benefit in terms of permanent increase in penis size as many manufacturers claim? Like many RP patients I feel that I lost some length as a result of the surgery.

I think in fact over the course of time, the erection produced by the pump got a little longer, but I can’t be absolutely sure.  But it is probably a mistake to worry about producing a large impressive erection, much as it helps your ego.  The Timm people tell you to stop pumping when the penis just lifts off the bottom of the tube, and to make sure the erect penis doesn’t look too stretched out.  If you overdo it, you will reduce sensitivity.  If you have any doubts about it, call their 800 number and ask for advice.  They are very helpful. My non-erect penis varies so much in size anyway, that I can’t say whether using the pump had any effect on it.   Most women will tell you that despite the folklore about it, they don’t really care that much about the size of your penis.  A shorter penis may even have some advantages because it allows closer body contact during intercourse. The tension ring sizes have to do with the amount of tension necessary to keep the blood in your penis, not the girth of the penis.  In fact, the pump may produce too much girth and make it difficult to penetrate, but use of a lubricant by your partner can help that.  Also, the use of a pillow can help your angle of approach. Don’t look at the videotape they send you with the pump.  That gentlemen has a very large penis and probably doesn’t suffer from impotence. They must have made it to sell the pump, not to help in its use.  They would have been better off hiring one of us prostate cancer patients for a more realistic demonstration.  :-) (3) What would be a recommended "exercise" program in terms of tomes per week or per day, length of session, cycles of pump and release or pump and hold, etc.

The Timm company gives you a schedule for practicing.  I called the 800 number about something else, but the fellow I spoke to gave me a slightly modified regimen.  I think he wanted me to practice twice a day for two weeks before attempting to put the rings on and to have intercourse, but I don’t really remember. Read the instructions and call them.   The biggest problem is getting an erect penis is maintaining a vacuum.   Liberal use of lubricant helps, but you may have to remove some pubic hair to make good contact.  Once you get the technique right, you should be able to get it up in something like five minutes, but you have to be careful not to overdo it.  Usually they recommend pumping once or twice every ten seconds or so. Any serious input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
