Biopsy Questions
Question:
Hi MKoch, I am sorry you have to go through this humbling experience but it is worth it! I drove 70 miles on a windy road to get to the Dr. office. I went in and was directed into a room. (this is after several enemas) Seated with my butt up in the air, and with a nurse and Dr. was there with his tools of the trade. they have a scope and a pad, and a screen that shows you the prostate. It also shows you the dark and shaded areas of question. With the flick of a wrist the machine sends in a fast and almost not felt, punch into the prostate. It draws the sample out in lightening speed. I told the Dr. that it did not feel good in the rear, and he remarked"Do you want it to feel Good" I really shriveled then…. I figured I was at the mercy of the Dr. Anyway all in all, I came out in one piece, and found out that indeed I had prostate cancer. that was the hard news to swallow. the test is nothing, and I drove home the same day, and even picked up a hitchhiker who thought he was bummed out! Little did he know I was really bummed. Anyway with the news pro or con you should feel happy that we have Dr.s here to do this kind of work, and please do follow up. Your life will be saved. John Loomis – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am about to have a first time biopsy and while I am aware of the bleeding and the method of the procedure I have a couple of questions. First, how much pain/discomfort is to be expected during the procedure? Second, what are your personal experiences with pain/discomfort after the procedure and how long does it last? Lastly, should I arrange for someone to drive me to and from the office and should I plan on taking the day off from work? While I realize these are rather trivial in the scope of this discussion group, I am none the less concerned. Your answers are appreciated. says… When I had mine at Geisinger Med Center, they had an IV going into my arm. A few minutes before I was wheeled into the room they gave me a shot of sedative or anesthetic…bingo..when I woke up it was done.

says… This is NOT a trivial question. As I face the up-coming prospect of surgery (ya, the biopsy was positive) I find myself much more concerned with catheterization then any other part of the treatment and follow-up.
Don’t worry about it. You will wake up with the thing inserted and lugging that blasted bag around for a couple of weeks is a pain (but not painful). It isn’t even all that uncomfortable. More words have been spent on the dread of having the thing removed. But if your surgeon is skilful and the thing was inserted and maintained properly in the first place, even removal is no big deal. Not pleasant, a weird feeliong, but over in a second. As my uro said, in 25 years of practice, not one patient had postponed an appointment to have the thing removed. With the catheter in, urination is not a problem. Keep it clean. But proper bowel function can be. For whatever reason, I had no problem though I did not have a BM until a day after I got home from the hospital. They will really try to get things started before you leave the hospital. Constipation is greatly to be avoided. — "When the game is going against you, stay calm — and cheat." Gen. Marty, My biopsy was a little painful but certainly tolerable. The pain goes away quickly – you should be able to return to work. There were absoolutely no lasting side effects (that were painful). It is not that bad. I had mine last week, get results tommorow. The anticipation was probably the worst. It was certainly uncomfortable but not really sharp pain. Listening to the clicks and having the doctor say "next" ping!was bad enough. My butt was sore for an hour or so, a little blood in urine and passed a clot the next morning. I drove home but would not haver wanted to go to work. I took 2 tynenol PMs that night. Hank Before you buy.

I agree with the rest of the replies. My doc gave the prostate a shot of Lidocaine (sp?) before he started. All I felt was a little pressure and heard that darn click on each sample. Drove home with no ill affects that day or later. Did have some blood in the urine – minor. The color, plum, of the ejaculate was downright scary but normal after this procedure. Use of a condom is recommended. I remember mine,And compared to others here I remember the experience as bein very attention getting after the Third Stick outta six ..The last three hurt And the Doc said they would Possibly be UNCOMFORTABLE! I reckon compared to a needle in a tooth nerve they could be considered uncomfortable! hehe..The machine was no problem goin in rectum,But those dang clicks when they cocked the shooter were nerve racking..I went into tiny room, and laid upon a smallish table ,,They hooked up ultrasound stuff,And then inserted the plumbers snake thingy etc and did 6cores..The first three i thought were really nothing,However the last three made sweat pop outta my whole body..It all took maybe 30 minutes if that long,,I hadda give a urine sample to doc right away AND it looked like Tomato Soup with beef chunks in it! Afterwards wasnt a big deal cuz i took some kinda antibiotic in prep..The blood in my urine lasted a couple weeks…In my case i had Agressive Cancer so i dunno if it made me more sensitive. But the doc said Most folks who have it say it hurt LESS than they thought it would..I unfortunately moved once upon bein stuck And that May not have helped either..I believe each individual is different,And my health is Fragile to begin with as i have other challenges ..And ill tell ya this After i been thru Everything the Biopsi,The RRP,The Implant etc etc to me the hardest part was drinkin that God awful crap they make ya drink to cleanse yer bowels before the op! hehe ..Good luck ,and remember you get braggin rites now explaining yer procedures to folks and watchin em cringe !!!

Pain is not a big deal. Discomfort is an accurate description for me. The actual taking of the biopsy sample was not a big deal. Sort of like someone snapping a rubber band on your hand (it ain’t on your hand though <grin). For me, there has been very mild discomfort post-procedure. A little irritation and for a few days it took awhile to get the urine flow started (this happened a few days post-procedure, not immediately). You should expect some blood in your urine, stool and/or ejaculation. I drove myself to and from the doctor’s office and had no problem resuming a normal day’s work. This is NOT a trivial question. As I face the up-coming prospect of surgery (ya, the biopsy was positive) I find myself much more concerned with catheterization then any other part of the treatment and follow-up. I would have thought that I’d be worried about the more permanent effects. So, ask away on any questions you have.. There is a great support group here. Paul

Some people have some minor pain when the needle clicks. Others just report discomfort. When I had mine, I went skiing in the morning, drove 40 miles to the hospital and after drove 40 miles back. There was no pain after although I wouldn’t have wanted to ride a bike right away. I had no blood in urine – just a little in stool the following day. The worst thing was the result of a caster oil laxative the previous day! -MIKE

It varies by individual I suppose but for me the worst part was the anticipation. As always, it seems, "anticipation is worse than realization." The best thing to do is understand that you don’t have to "help" the doctor, you just have to lay still like a side of beef. Knowing that NOW, if I had had to undergo the biopsy a second time I’d have brought a "Book on Tape" or some music to listen to through headphones and ask him not to keep telling me "Okay, here I go again"<g nor would I have listened to him double-cock the bioposy needle device. That, for me anyway, was the worst part of the entire procedure. That ominous clicking sound and then him telling me that he was about to take another sample. Of the six I had, only the second was what I would call discomforting, the rest were nothing. Second, what are your personal experiences with pain/discomfort after the procedure and how long does it last?
Pain afterwards, for me anyway, was nothing. No discomfort to speak of once I got off the table. Lastly, should I arrange for someone to drive me to and from the office and should I plan on taking the day off from work?
I did, but didn’t need it. I think you should though "just in case" While I realize these are rather trivial in the scope of this discussion group, I am none the less concerned.
Nothing having to do with the detection and cure of this disease is trivial and you have every right to be concerned. That’s what this group is all about. Ask away! Bob
