Please help!

Question:

My husband has a friend that requested I attempt to get some information for him through the internet.  He is a prostate cancer patient diagnosed with a PSA of 22 and a tumor of 1. centimeter X .6 centimeter (3/4" X 3/8").  Staging was IIB with a Gleson Score of 8.  His question is how long would the progression from start to present day (above information) have taken? Any help would be greatly appreciated as he is retired from the military and cannot get any help as to if it is service-induced, etc.  He needs to know the progression time to relate if he got it or it began from something involved with the service. Thanks.  Del  Medford  NJ

There are volumes of information on the Internet to review, some of which gives the kind of information you want.  Prostate.com is one, Johns Hopkins has a great site, Oncolink, Medilink, and many others. The cancer growth in the prostate is suppose to be slow.  Tell him not to fool around waiting.  Get as much info as possible and be an assertive part of the medical process.

**** He needs to know also that Prostate Cancer has recently been added to the list of ‘compensatable’ diseases by the government, as relates to Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam.  If he was there then, he might be able to make a case.  Of course, then he’d have to get ‘treatment’ at a VA hospital, not a very reassuring prospect for a headache, let alone for a complex disease like Prostate Cancer. Catch-22, yet again! Best of luck to your friend …. Pax, Charlie
